The Haunted House as Psyche: A Jungian Exploration of Gothic Fiction and the Living Spirit of Place

23 abr 2026 - 14 may 2026

Sobre

"No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality," Shirley Jackson warns us. But what reality does the haunted house reveal . . . and conceal? This course examines the haunted house as a profound symbol of the human psyche through the interpretive framework of C.G. Jung and depth psychology. Beginning with Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House and extending through works like Danielewski's House of Leaves, we trace how authors have used domestic architecture to externalize internal terrors: shadow material, repressed trauma, and the return of what consciousness refuses to acknowledge. Yet haunted places are not merely literary devices. Drawing on the classical concept of genius loci, the spirit of place, we explore how certain locations seem to possess autonomous presence, personality, and even agency. Are these spirits psychological projections, or do places themselves hold memory and intention? What does it mean to be haunted? What do houses want from us? And what forgotten aspects of ourselves await in the rooms we fear to enter?
