Encountering Soul: A Depth Psychological look at the Selkie and Fisherman folktale

Feb 28, 2026 - Feb 28, 2026

About

In this 90-minute experiential class, participants are invited to drop into the sacred folktale of The Selkie and the Fisherman. Using guided meditation, reflective writing, and discussion, the class explores how myth illuminates our lived experience. After a retelling of the story, participants will explore the Fisherman as a symbol of ego consciousness, and the Selkie as an image of soul. The myth reveals the delicate and often fraught relationship between ego and psyche, bringing to the foreground themes of concealment and unconcealment, belonging and exile, possession and release. Writing prompts on images from the tale—the fisherman, the selkie, the ocean- offer a contemplative way to nourish the interior life and deepen symbolic understanding. Group dialogue will further tease out the relevance of this myth for our contemporary lives. Suitable for both beginners and advanced students of depth psychology, this class demonstrates how myth can guide, heal, and offer insight during pivotal chapters of personal transformation. Saturday, Feb. 28th 2pm ET/11am PT General Registration: $40. ISM Membership: $25 (email info@ismythology.com for discount code) *Please note this will NOT be recorded.
