Artemis Cults: From Sacred Groves to City Temples

Sep 18, 2025 - Oct 23, 2025

About

This 6-week online course explores the cultic traditions, rituals, symbols, and sacred spaces associated with Artemis, one of the most enduring goddesses of the ancient Mediterranean. From wild groves and remote springs to monumental temples and civic festivals, Artemis was venerated across diverse regions as huntress, healer, protector, savior, and liminal guide. We will engage with mythological narratives, primary texts, archaeological evidence, and ritual theory to examine how Artemis’s worship shaped the lives of women, communities, and landscapes. Each week includes a rich lecture, guided journaling, an interactive ritual or contemplative practice, and optional readings from ancient texts and modern scholarship. The course will also include images and insights from the Artemis Mapping Project and Carla’s fieldwork across Greece and Anatolia. Thursday's, September 18 - October 23rd, 7 to 9pm Eastern Time (4 to 6pm PT). This will be recorded. ISM Members receive $50 off. Please email info@ismythology.com to receive the discount code.
