A particular Lenca myth tells how the Mother Goddess, Ish-Managual created the Lenca people, who predated the Maya and occupied most of Central America. This myth passed down orally to Leonel Chevez, described in his book Ti Manauelike: The Lenca Taulepa Chief, focuses on the mother goddess whose mission was to leave the heavens and come down to Managuara (the land of the Lenca) to create the first humans and then return to the heavens once she had accomplished her task.
