About this event
Athena Manifested: Divinity’s Progressive Manifestation in Homer's Odyssey
Athena’s progressive manifestation in Homer’s Odyssey as a divine principle gradually manifested within and around Odysseus. Building on Joseph Campbell’s idea that “only birth can conquer death,” the lecture asks not only what is reborn in the poem, but who—or what—comes into being. Athena’s presence is traced from abstract qualities such as mētis and technē, through vegetal, inanimate, and human forms, until she finally appears as a fully revealed goddess. This unfolding suggests that Odysseus’ return is not merely a homecoming, but the maturation of divine intelligence within the heroic soul.
