Ceridwen: Shapeshifting Through the Anthropocene
The Welsh figure Ceridwen is a consummate shapeshifter—as evidenced by her mythic transmogrifications in Ystoria Taliesin and by the evolving forms she has assumed in the imagination of poets, scholars, and Neo-Pagan practitioners throughout the centuries. She is the mother-muse of the medieval bardic tradition, the powerful sorceress of Elis Gruffydd’s 16th century tale, and a revered goddess within modern witchcraft and Neo-Pagan traditions. Considering her fluidity and the initiatory role she has played within Welsh literature and beyond, one can hardly be shocked that, as a modern deity, she is often considered a goddess of transformation.
Adopting a Jungian-informed ecopsychological lens, this session will discuss Ceridwen as an archetypal figure emerging from Welsh literature…
