Nammu and Tiamat: Looking for the Ocean Mother

In some of the world's foundational written stories, the world begins with a great ocean goddess who births the other gods and the elements. How can myths of the ocean mother speak to us today? How might we view our relationship with the ocean as alive and create new myths for our personal and planetary future?


In this "Living Goddesses" session, writer, storyteller, scholar, and Myth Lab founder Ingrid Norton will take us into ancient Mesopotamian stories, where we glimpse the ocean mother Nammu in Sumerian texts from more than 5,000 years ago and where the ocean creatrix Tiamat is slain, but still at the bedrock of the world, in later…
