Numinous Nymphs of Ancient Greece
Nymphs as nature spirits and feminine guardians of place and growing life. How are nymphs different than goddesses? Why are nymphs always depicted as feminine, and how does their femininity relate to their function in Greek mythology? In this presentation, we will cover the names and functions of selected nymphs, trace their stories, and look at how they are still representative of our modern society’s views on women’s status and function. Nymphs are often victims that maintain autonomy and power to transform themselves when faced with a situation that is potentially negative, such as assault by the gods or humans, but are frequently viewed as sexual objects to be used by men.
