Numinous Nymphs of Ancient Greece

Nymphs can be found throughout Ancient Greek mythology in rivers, streams, and meadows. These Nymphs are nature spirits with a strong reputation in modern times, often associated with sex, promiscuity, and femininity without agency. This couldn’t be further from the truth found in myth. This presentation focuses on another type of Nymph not associated with the natural, but with the supernatural—the chthonic Underworld Nymphs. The Lampades are the torch-bearing Nymphs of the Underworld, associated with Hekate and the Eleusinian Mysteries of Demeter, and Leuke, Hades’ first love. Join Dr. Randall Ulyate as we descend into the Underworld to explore how these Nymphs broaden our understanding of Ancient Greek mythology.
